Elements Of A Good Design

Classic Components

Think of the elements of design as the basic building blocks. These elements will be part of everything you design, from consumer products and furniture to magazine pages and billboards, whether you know that or not. (For now, we will restrict our discussion to the layouts that are common to print and web publishing.) It should go without saying, but very little does anymore, that understanding these basic elements will enable you to create more powerful pages for your packaging, ad, magazine or website.

At the most basic level, there are five elements in any design:

1. Lines and Linework

These terms do not refer to pen-and-ink or pencil sketches, but to borders, frames and rules. Horizontal or vertical, thick or thin, regular or irregular, they help define and delimit spaces around various elements on your pages. Good linework increases both the readability and “directionality” (see #5, below) of the design as a whole.

2. Shape

Any enclosed area, form or contour in your design is a shape. Shapes in most layouts are square or rectangular, but nothing says they must be, and circles are useful, too. You can also use images to create other, regular or irregular shapes
3. Texture

Texture imparts a “surface” feeling, and is tactile in printed matter, so choosing the paper stock-matte, weave, coated – is a design decision, too. Textures on layouts meant for broadcast or the Internet are visual only, but still key.

4. Color

Color is probably the element that most designers are at least acutely aware of, if not schooled in. However, color is not required in many designs, and some art educators suggest creating designs without any color first. The artist, in this view, should then add only as much color as needed to enhance or complete the design. Another school of thought holds that color should be one of the first elements determined. Experience and experimentation will help every artist develop a good color sense and strategy.

5. Direction

Effectively designed layouts, in magazines or on your computer screen, usually have a sense of motion. A good design will lead the reader’s eyes through the design deliberately, using color changes, shapes, linework and copy placement to direct viewers’ attention to what the designer wants them to see.

Balance and Interest

Other considerations enter in to the process of making good design choices, such as the feelings of space, balance, action and even excitement. The important thing for young, inexperienced designers to remember is that “less is more”. One can often identify the design work of a beginner by a lack of open (or “negative”) space, an overdose of motion or color contrast, the proliferation of different typefaces and conflicting directionality. Rather than pull every tool and trick out of the bag, the designer needs to remember the ultimate aim of the layout, which for pages in print or on the web is quite simple: Draw the reader in so you can deliver your message.

It seems much simpler after, say, three or four years in a fast-paced, high quality, well-managed design studio. One of the simpler ways of judging a page design is to ask, Does it say “read me” when you look at it? Frankly, some print and web pages look like the backside of a rental agreement, while others seem designed to confuse the readers or test their reactions to optical illusions.

The bottom line of good design is, quite simply, to attract readers’ attention, direct it in a particular way and, in concert with the copywriting, make a positive impression. It is, after all, “commercial art” at which most artists work. It becomes much easier for them to do as they learn to leave their egos out of it and simply do what is necessary, proper and effective. If they are unable to do so, perhaps they should go get one of Picasso’s paintbrushes and be a different kind of artist entirely.

Microsoft Bing Search Engine is Up

bing

Now that Bing has been officially launched by Microsoft in order to provide some competition in the Internet Search Engine

arena, most web users and administrators would be looking for ways to be ranked well in Bing. The answers to this issue are certainly convoluted and it would not come to any of us easily at a time like this. Certainly, Bing would not follow the Google way and would be stricter in ranking sites and blogs. Perhaps they would not operate based on linkbacks and on-site SEO but would depend on content research.

There is also a possibility that only authoritative sites would be ranked while the rest of the websites appearing in results depending on the content and its quality. This might worry many web users and site admins as their previous Live Search ranking may take a beating. Now if Bing will behave the way analysts have been pointing out, bloggers may not do really well in the results.

A search for blogs and their names returns with the home page results but when I tried for particular posts already indexed on Google, Bing did not come back with the same results for an of the combination of search keywords. This could prove to be a death knell for blogs and those who publish using blog software. Bing may not work like Google and it is actually not supposed to work like the Google algorithm.

Bing depends more on the location of the content, jobs, product reviews, travel decisions and health keywords. This may mean that content heavy blogs ma just miss the Bing boat. On the contrary, content heavy sites have the chance of being ranked well because they have been authority sites elsewhere. It may be safe to assume that the guys at Microsoft will implement nofollow and the page ranking rules are going to be stricter, and in a way it is good for respectable and deserving sites who work a lot for their content instead of spending thousands on link building and Google SEO.

Bing SEO techniques and tips may not be far away and people will definitely come up with was to increase or improving rankings and results on Bing, if it really takes off. With the SEO being set aside for a while, Bin certainly fares well when compared with Google. Of course, Google looks better and we all know how it works. However, video search results, image results and also certain keywords fare better on Bing. Moreover, Bing has an easy and customizable interface. It almost brings the same results as Google if not better, and is faster too.

However, accessing porn seems to be really easy, especially if you are looking for videos. Bing does seem like a great alternative to Google and with Google almost hogging all the search traffic, Bing would be a good balance if it is successful. Of course, Microsoft Bing may not and will not win over Google but if Microsoft buys Yahoo search, Bing certainly will be a formidable balance and that would make Internet a more democratic and competitive place.

The downsides of Bing are, one would not want to see hose weird graphics on the homepage as it looks cluttered, though it is minimalist. Many of the features seem copied from Google and there is no reason why people would suddenly switch over from Google to Bing.

However, many had been wanting an alternative search engine, especially those who feared Google’s dominance. Moreover, Bing really brings great search results in the spheres of product reviews, movie listings, weather, travel, and stock prices. For the moment, Bing may provide the competition that Google needs to stay humble, and in the coming weeks, Bign may reveal a wealth of features and advantages which have not been understood yet. Even SEO on Bing would clearer and less ambiguous.

What is The Google Sandbox Effect?

In the age of fair competition you may find it hard to believe that a search engine may hinder the appearance of a new website.

This is what is currently believed to be happening on more web servers today. Some programmers have viewed Google as uncomfortable to rank newer websites until they have proven their viability to exist for more than a period of “x” months. Thus the term “Sandbox Effect” applies to the idea that all new websites have their ratings placed in a holding tank until such time is deemed appropriate before a ranking can commence.

However the website is not hindered as much as the links that are reciprocated from other users. Newer links that are created are put on a “probationary” status until again they pickup in rank from other matured sites or placed directly by an ad campaign. The idea behind the hindrance is to prevent a fast ranking to occur on a new website. The usual holding period seems to be between 90 and 120 days before a site would start obtaining rank from reciprocal or back linking.

Some advice has been given to have companies you are going to reciprocate back add your link first to the website. This may help grandfather your site in, thus reducing the waiting time associated with “new” websites. People have noticed a 0 page rank when first signing up and receiving a bolstering 7 page ranking after 4 months. Why the delay? The fact is, that if people realized how easy it would be to get a high ranking, would that take away the credibility of the engine. It depends on whom you ask, but it does seem to be happening frequently to newer subscribers. Do not discontinue back linking, your rank will eventually appear.

Google set to introduce its own Web browser-Google Chrome

Google Chrome Review

Before i start, let me just say that the only browsers i use are firefox (THE Browser) and IE (just to check if the pages that i develop appear correctly and work). So, in advance, i’m sorry if i point some feature in google Chrome that already exists natively in other browser.

Yesterday i finally got access to Google Chrome Download Page, some time after the anouncement made on google’s official blog. The expectation was high and Google didn’t disappoint.

First, the installation is very quick. I went to http://www.google.com/chrome , Clicked the big blue button, downloaded a setup file, and chrome was installed in no time. Simple, quick, straight to the point.

First thing i noticed: The speed!!! The browser loads in a flash (not like firefox that, at least in my computer, takes a little time to load). When i started to browse some pages, i was astonished with the load speed.

Like google explained in the google chrome presentation comic book, chrome uses one process for each tab. This has several advantages. The ones that i best remember are:

  • If a page crashes, only that page is closed, not the browser;
  • When we don’t need a page, the process of that tab is closed and the memory allocated is released.

After this i decided to explore the developer suport that the browser offered. Well, i was amazed because chrome is only a beta and already has several features that are really useful. All of this without installing any plugin.

The dom inspector makes me remember Firebug. Can inspect every element and, at the same time, travel through the dom and see the styles aplied to each element. Yes, we already have this feature in firefox using firebug, but in chrome this feature is native, thats the beauty of it.

For javascript i found a console and a text mode debugger. I didn’t spent any time exploring them. Maybe one of this days i’ll take a few hours to explore this tools.

Finally two features that are really handy (at least for me):

  • native language corrector (it has some bugs, but this is only a beta, i give a discount).
  • element inspector in the right context menu.

Google Chrome surprised me. Fast, Simple, Lite. Can be both a browser for the common internet user, has it can be a browser for a developer. Google exceeded my expectations and proved, once more, to be a company that studies the market and knowns what the users want.

Chrome is going to be a first choice for now on. I’m official Chromed!!! I hope that future releases bring more and more new features to help improve even more this browser.
